Welcome to

Finnsheep

Our History with Sheep

I started in the early 2000's with Oxford and Romanov sheep, which I thoroughly enjoyed, but after gaining experience living with sheep, they just didn't have all of the qualities I was looking for. I liked the Oxford for their calm, even temperament and Romanov because of the unique characteristics such as short tails and being naturally polled (no horns) with a manageable size. Unfortunately, their temperaments weren't very consistent and their flightiness was not easy to manage for catching, shearing, medicating or handling. I also kept Dorset, Suffolk as well as other breeds

(Lincoln, Border Leister, Romney) and crosses of those, for several years.

Being particularly attracted to unique colored sheep and markings, eventually (2011) I discovered Finnsheep. I enjoy looking out the window into the pasture and being able to tell them all apart.

I went to visit a former customer who had purchased several of my ewes and lambs for their home sheep and goat dairy farm, where I saw my first Finnsheep. I left there, and then very shortly returned, to buy one! At first, I had no plans on breeding him or getting into registered purebred lambs.

I named this first Finnsheep Denny. He was purebred, but unregistered. His mother was purebred born in 2010, but was the product of an accidental breeding when their ram flock entered into the ewe pasture. Although all animals on the property were purebred and registered animals, the father was not known. So the entire flock of 2010 lambs born in that time frame were unregistered, but quality animals.

While enjoying Denny so much, I started looking for more Finnsheep. I soon acquired my first registered Finn, Xenya. I was in love, and knew THIS WAS THE BREED FOR ME!

Ever since, I have sought out and acquired good, pedigreed, healthy, registered Finnsheep from varied lines and coat colors and quality. It was also important to me that the breeders I purchased my sheep from tested their flocks for various diseases. Including Johnes and OPP.

I diligently choose to breed for great fleece quality, color, health and temperament. In addition to those fantastic qualities, Finnsheep are also known for birthing multiple lambs, their outstanding mothering abilities, manageable medium size, the best milk production, polled (no horns), naturally short tails (no docking), ease of management, and so on.

I do have some other breeds and cross breeds of sheep for the purpose of differing colors, fleece types and size, for customers who are looking for something different. But maintaining purebred, quality, registered Finns is our first priority.
