Ko Shamo

The two birds pictured above are my first Ko Shamo. The cockerel on the left is from Brian Decker, and the hen is from Peter Lor. These two birds won Best of Breed (BB) and Reserve of Breed (RB) at Poultry Congress in Springfield Massachusetts 2023
Ko Shamo are a breed which originated in Japan. The name is translated as "ko" meaning little, or small, and "shamo" means fighter. So in English it is roughly called 'little fighter'. Ko Shamo one of the most popular of the small Shamo breeds, none of which have large fowl counterparts, and none of which should be referred to as ‘Shamo Bantams’. They are a true bantam. They are strong, muscular little birds with very sparse plumage, and are considered a "hard feathered" breed. Slightly differing types are considered to be correct in Japan, their country of origin, and there will probably always be some variation here too. The most important attributes should be character and attitude, strong head and beak, prominent shoulders, very short, hard feathers and a tiny ‘prawn’ tail.
This breed is particularly friendly to humans, but the stags (cockerels) generally need to be separated around 3-4 months of age, otherwise damage from fighting will occur.
They are not particularly tolerant of cold, and are best kept above freezing. They do not have the downy under-feathers that many breeds of poultry have to stay warm and are too small to maintain their body heat in extreme cold.

I do make young birds available at 8 weeks of age or older, and occasionally make eggs available. I only sell hatching eggs of this breed by the half dozen, due tot the fact they are not prolific layers and I want to ship them as fresh as possible.

The picture to the left, is my first hen, seen above, and the second hen, on the right, I purchased for my breeding foundation. Brian Decker was good enough to choose and transport her for me from Arturo Lozano. I am so greatful to the breeders who have helped me get into this breed. This pullet won Reserve of Breed (RB) at the 150th APA Ohio Nationals in November 2023.
The stag on the left was bred by breeder/judge John Beamer and won Best of Breed (BB) at the same Nationals.

I am happy to announce, that my stock has, yet again, taken best of breed at the APA Ohio Nationals again in 2024. It was a pullet hatched early "24, out of my favorite cock and hen in the photos at the top of this page.
